My mom was considered a very heavy smoker, if I remember she smoked close to 3 packs a day of Marlboro 100's. The thing I recall the most was every morning in the winter when she would drive me to school in her old Buick. We are talking about the 1960's. It would be freezing outside and she would wait for me so we both walked out to that ice cold car. And of course she always lit a cigarette before walking out the door. We would get in that old car, she always made me sit in the backseat, and sometimes it would take her 5 to 10 minutes to get the engine started, and a number of cigarettes. She would always have it dangling from her mouth as she cranked the engine and frantically pumped the gas pedal, only stopping to flick the ashes in the large ashtray that was always full. After a few miuntes I remember the inside of that old car was so full of smoke my eyes were watering. But she never gave up. After a few more cigarettes and the constant cranking and bouncing in the drivers seat with her non stop pedal pumping it would eventually start. We would get to the school and the rush of smoke when the car door opened was noticeable, and sometimes the kids would tell me I smelled like smoke.
Mom is gone, but she continued to smoke heavily until the end. I don't smoke, but my older sisters took after mom, they too are heavy smokers.
