Minnesota might have been a good place for early female smoking because so many of the residents were Scandanavian immigrants. I was reading about the history of Swedish smoking and women started smoking there in large numbers earlier than most of the world. So many Swedish women started smoking in the 1900s-1940s that only 21% of women from that era had never been daily smokers.Despite being pioneers in female smoking, today Sweden has the lowest smoking rate in Europe (by far the lowest for men, but also low for women). Minnesota also has a low smoking prevalence.
