I'm not surprised to hear that this show was produced in the '70s. Thinking about it, I first spotted it in 1986, which is when I caught what I believed was the first smoking scene in the blonde's bedroom. She did one right fine job of hammering that cigarette, inhaled every drag, much of the time staring at herself while posing in front of a mirror. She'd throw her head back and do these creamy exhales. Like I said, she was clearly IRL. By sheer coincidence, I caught the entire show maybe a week later. (Gratefully, most PBS stations re-run shows forever.) Sitting and watching it, I found it beyond belief. To this day I'm convinced an SF type came up with the premise and probably cast and produced it. The blonde's smoking was right in your face, not just something that was implied, as well as it could have been.
Being old enough to remember the 70s/80s very well, I doubt her smoking raised a single eyebrow at the time, most parents likely saw it as being a strong anti message. Trust me, it was no such thing.
I'm confident that clips of it are still out there and will try and locate same. Should I have any success, I'll post a link. FWIW, the title of that episode gave no clue as to what it was about.
