This is just the kind of information about social customs you can hardly ever find in newspapers or other sources, and which people are always guessing wrong about. I think the two most suggestive facts are that whereas a year or two earlier women had been too embarrassed to buy cigarettes in public, by the time of the article they were doing so without hesitation; and that smoking was the fashion only among certain classes of women. Btw, I recently came across a really interesting historical study of women's smoking with the same title as this site, by Penny Tinkler. Her interest is primarily sociological, but she also reports some facts I hadn't been aware of. We know so little about things in the past--even the things that have touched us.
