I bet there is a history of smoking in the early days in many families. On my mother's side of the family, my sister took up smoking around 1880, and my mother constantly reminded her that she was the first female in that line of the family to smoke. My father said his great-great grandmother, who was born the year the civil war ended and died when he was a child, told about the old days and said her mother smoked a pipe.
