One of the best SF fiction pieces I've read. Why not make the characters as real as we can? I believe the problem with a lot of the pieces I have read is that the writers go right to the smoking and/or sex without giving the reader some background information giving the characters depth and believability. BTW isn't it time for one of our better writers to go beyond the internet story archieves and message boards, and attempt to get published or find an indy producer to (dare I say) film the story? I watch the IFC channel, and have been seeing some pretty far out kinky stuff lately. I don't think something like this story would shatter any taboo sensabilities, and might make folks like us seem less strange to the mainstream, white bread crowd.
