Just got back from a trip back east. It's been awhile since the last time I travelled and I definately noticed a difference regarding smoking in hotels. I booked hotels online for four different cities. Some hotels I was interested in I passed on as the were non-smoking. So the rooms I booked were all smoking rooms. The first hotel I got to I checked in and they gave me a key. No mention of smoking/non so I just confirmed that it was a smoking room. "No I'm sorry we don't have any smoking rooms left" "You can smoke but only on the balcony outside of the rooms". Ergh. Next hotel... Checked in and went into room. No ashtray. Called desk and they said it was a smoking room and would send up an ashtray as it must have been missed. Next place... checked in and no smoking rooms left (again, booked smoking room online). Ok to smoke in room though and they gave an ashtray. And then the final hotel, smoking room yes but ashtray only if you request it.
Now I understand hotels try their best to give you a view if you "request" it, or away from the elevator if you "request" it... but don't you think if you book a room that is a "Queen - smoking" room it should be a guaranteed thing?? The feeling I ended up with smoking in each of these hotels was that I really shouldn't be smoking in them, but of course I had to. You know who I felt sorry for is the other side of the issue as well. The non-smoker who books a non-smoking room only to find that someone had been smoking in it. I feel both smoking and non-smoking should be a guaranteed thing don't you think?? I mean people are pretty firm on there position on either side.
